Saint Louis Creek Water Monitoring With Fraser Valley Elementary

We’re excited to be working with local children on a hands-on project to monitor the health of St. Louis Creek in Fraser. Together, we’ve placed leaf packs in the river—bundles of leaves that provide habitat and food for aquatic insects and other small organisms. Each week, the students return to the creek to check the leaf packs and observe what has been living and growing in them.

By looking at the types and abundance of aquatic invertebrates and algae we find, we can get a better picture of the creek’s overall health and how conditions may be changing over time. More importantly, this project gives local kids the opportunity to get their hands in the water, learn about the creatures that call the creek home, and become active stewards of their local watershed. We’re looking forward to seeing what the creek tells us as the project continues!
